Stratigraphy and Sedimentation
Stratigraphy is defined in the opening paragraph of Grabau's monumental Principles of Stratigraphy as "The inorganic side of historical geology, or the development through the successive geologic ages of the earth's rocky framework or lithosphere." The definition reflects the original concept of stratigraphy as the branch of geologic science concerned with the description, organization, and classification of stratified rocks. In a strict sense, sedimentation refers to the processes responsible for the formation of sedimentary rocks, including the origin, transportation, and deposition of rock-forming materials, their diagenesis and lithification.
